250–300 spot beams
Focused power for phone-sized antennas.
Coverage & technology
Thuraya’s geosynchronous satellites cover Pakistan border to border and more than 160 countries across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australia.
Footprint
Thuraya’s service reaches beyond terrestrial networks into remote areas that conventional mobile networks cannot cover, bringing satellite communication within reach of ordinary people as well as organisations.
Point your antenna
From Pakistan the satellite sits low in the south-western sky. Step away from walls, cliffs and tall trees, extend the antenna and point it in the direction shown.
Extend the antenna, step into the open and face the direction shown. Buildings, trees and steep valley walls between you and the south-western sky can block the signal.
System architecture
THURAYA-1 launched on 21 October 2000 aboard a Sea Launch Zenit-3SL rocket from the equator in the Pacific. Thuraya began commercial service in Pakistan in January 2002.
The turnkey system was built by Boeing Satellite Systems. Thuraya’s satellite serving Pakistan holds geosynchronous orbit at 44° East, with capacity of about 13,750 telephone channels and handsets comparable to GSM phones in size and voice quality.
Focused power for phone-sized antennas.
Coverage reshaped in orbit to follow demand.
Thuraya-to-Thuraya calls connect via the satellite.
10 dB link margins for reliable calls.
Satellite and GSM in one service.
Space, ground and user segments working together.
